Rafiq Uddin Ahmed
(1926-1952)

Rafiq Uddin Ahmed a martyr of Language Movement. He was born in 30 October 1926 at the village of Paril in Shingair thana of Manikgonj district. He was the eldest son of Abdul Latif Miyan and Rafiza Khatun. Rafique had four younger brothers: Rashid, Khaleque, Salam and Khorshed Alam. Rafiq was distinguished, since his childhood, as a supportive, upright, patriotic social worker with passion for music and theatre. He staged and acted in various plays in the neighboring villages.

He matriculated from Baira School in 1949. While a student of Intermediate class at Devendra College in Manikganj he discontinued his studies and moved to Dhaka. There he worked in his father's commercial printing business.

Rafiq's wedding was fixed with his cousine Rahela Khanom Panu. On 21st February 1952, although scheduled to return home with his shopping for forthcoming wedding, due to his love for Bangla language, instead of going home, joined the protest rally of Bangla Language Movement organized by the students of Dhaka University.

When police opened fire at the Dhaka Medical College premises, Rafiq was shot at his head. His scull was displaced and died immediately. He is probably the first martyr of the language movement and was later buried at Azimpur Graveyard by the Army. His graveyard though was lost and cannot be identified later.

He was awarded Ekushey Padak posthumously in the year 2000 for his up most sacrifice.
